Can POXY COAT® II be stored after the can is opened?
How is POXY COAT® II applied?
You can brush it, roll it or spray it on. For rolling or spraying, thinning and light multiple coats may be recommended. It's normally ready to use straight from the can by brush.
Can POXY COAT® II be applied over most paint and finishes?
Yes. POXY COAT® II can be applied over almost every type of old painted or finished surface.
How should the surface be prepared for POXY COAT® II?
For a particular surface, no more preparation is needed than for other finishes. Simply apply on clean, dry surfaces. Sand lightly to provide a better bond before applying the initial coat. We also recommend wiping down the surface first with thinner or cleaner for best results.
Can it be used on lapstrake, planked and other jointed construction?
It is excellent for all these types of construction. Since it is flexible, it works with joints and is effective against cracking or chipping.
At what temperature and humidity can it be stored?
At almost any temperature and low humidity.
Is sanding necessary between coats?
Sanding is not necessary. It is only recommended where you desire an exceptionally smooth surface but it is not necessary for adhesion.
If water or moisture gets under it, will it rip off?
If all surfaces are prepared and coated properly moisture should not penetrate it. Be sure surfaces are clean and dry prior to application.
Can other paints be applied over POXY COAT® II?
Yes, but we do not recommend it because they will destroy the flexibility of POXY COAT® II.
How long will it last?
Many applications have gone as long as 15 years without recoating, then another thin coat will usually extend its life for a comparable period.
Is a special primer needed?*
Not necessarily. POXY COAT® II has such good adhesion to wood, masonry and other surfaces that there is usually no need for a primer. On unpainted surfaces, POXY COAT® II (thinned down) as the primer coat followed by undiluted POXY COAT® II as the topcoat is recommended. Prime Time™ should be used on bare metal surfaces prior to Poxy Coating. (Also over rusty metal.)
How long do POXY COLOR and POXY CLEAR take to dry?
They generally dry to touch in 2 hours. Wait 24 hours for recoating. POXY SEAL™ dries to touch in 15 minutes—generally cures overnight.
Can POXY COAT® II be applied over fiberglass and synthetic material?
Yes, POXY COAT® II has very good adhesion on these surfaces with a prior sanding.
What is used to thin POXY COAT® II and to clean tools?
POXY COLOR should normally be thinned for the first coat with mineral spirits. Mineral spirits may also be used to clean tools. Successive coats should be applied full strength if using a brush. Thinner should be used for most spray gun and roller applications.
What is used to thin POXY SEAL™ and to clean tools?
POXY SEAL™ #901 should not be thinned; tools should be cleaned with mineral spirits.
What kind of brush or roller should be used?
Most of the ordinary good quality brushes of the bristle type can be used. Synthetic bristle brushes or rollers are not recommended since they may not be compatible with POXY COAT® II.
Is it necessary to use a catalyst activator or cloth with POXY COAT® II?
POXY COAT® II comes ready for use and may be used like a paint without any mixing of ingredients. A catalyst is recommended for certain floor applications.
Can POXY COAT® II be stored after the can is opened?
Since no catalyst or activator is necessary with POXY COAT® II it has better storage life than paint. Partly filled POXY COAT® II containers securely sealed for proper shelf-life storage have been known to last up to three (3) years or more. For long-term storage of partly filled containers, pour an approximate one-inch "blanket" of mineral spirits on top prior to sealing tightly.
* Not to be thinned in geographic areas where thinner will result in violation of VOC regulations.
